While many consider the United States Coast Guard to fall under the same purview as the other military branches, it is actually a part of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), and formerly an arm of the Department of Transportation (DOT).

Born Ready. Some of the most specialized members of our nation’s defense are trained by the USCG. From rescue operations along the US Coast to drug interdiction in our surrounding waters, “Coasties” are often called up on to perform difficult and dangerous tasks to make sure we all sleep well at night. In addition, the USCG performs many community-based efforts that extend into the private boating safety arena and are often seen in all major US ports and waterways performing Law Enforcement functions.

Among various other actions, the CG is heavily involved in environmental enforcement that is often met with cooperation from international partners. Illegal fishing activity enforcement is one the little-known roles they take.

Economic impact presence is not often thought of as something the Coast Guard may be associated with. However, without safe shipping channels, our country’s significant overseas trade would suffer tremendously. In recent years, anti-piracy efforts have been the focus of media attention. Such repeated events are likely prevented as a result of USCG Cutter presence around the world.

Since the early 1980′s when cocaine smuggling became a major US epidemic in South Florida, the CG has played a vital role in preventing the importation of illegal drugs. There is a highly concentrated and extremely capable group of Coasties that cooperate with Federal authorities to routinely stop illicit drug flow into the United States via sea going vessels and aircraft. Much of this traffic originates in Central America and Mexico, and several special challenge coins have evolved from select interdiction efforts.

It is here that cadets are immersed into the way of life that is commensurate with Coast Guard service: a high sense of honor, respect and devotion to duty.
